On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” The New York Times Columnist David Brooks wrote that former President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal to offer green cards to foreigners who graduate from American universities makes sense, because Trump “pretends not to be a politician, but he is a politician, and he’s saying things that will make the “rich people” he’s talking to at the time as happy as possible.” He also wrote that Trump is a “business executive,” and “immigration is good for business.”
Brooks said he “to some extent” believes Trump’s proposal is sincere and that the plan is “common sense.”
He added: “I believe him, because he’s a corporate executive. He was having a conversation with a couple of tech executives at the time, and immigration was their No. 1 issue. So he said, A. As an executive, immigration is good for business. … And B. He’s a politician. He pretends he’s not, but he is a politician and he says things to make the people he’s talking to, the rich people he’s talking to, as happy as possible. And thirdly, I’ve observed that MAGA has moved significantly to the right over the last three or four years, much more right than it was before, much more right than Donald Trump was. And that’s true on abortion. That’s true on immigration. That’s true on a whole range of issues. So he seems a lot more flexible now on all issues than the movement has been.”
