Justice Department to Monitor Polling Places

The Trump-era Justice Department announced on Friday its plan to oversee several polling locations in California and New Jersey ahead of the upcoming off-year election on November 4. This move aims to safeguard transparency, security of votes, and adherence to federal laws.

Officers from the Department’s Civil Rights Division will specifically monitor polling sites across counties like Kern, Riverside, Fresno, Orange, and Los Angeles in California, as well as Passaic County in New Jersey.

It was stated, “We have received reports of fraud in these counties and are concerned that voters might participate less in the election and feel less confident about the results.”

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon emphasized the importance of transparency in electoral processes, saying, “The Department of Justice will do what it takes to protect the votes of eligible Americans and ensure election security.”

In New Jersey, voters will choose a replacement for Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat. The current candidates are Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciatarelli. The previous gubernatorial race was notably close, with a margin under 4 points.

A recent Rutgers Eagleton Poll predicts that if the election were held that week, about 50% would back Sherrill and 45% would choose Ciatarelli.

Additionally, the New Jersey Republican Party requested federal monitors to oversee mail-in ballot handling and access to election officials in Passaic County, traditionally a Democratic region.

The New Jersey GOP highlighted concerns about a “long and sordid history” of vote-by-mail fraud, citing past incidents that have raised alarms about transparency and proper responses from state authorities.

Similar requests for monitoring were made by the California Republican Party, urging for oversight in five counties due to reported instances of fraud that could affect voter confidence and participation.

Colin Rankin, Chairman of the State Republican Party, expressed urgency for this oversight in a letter to the Justice Department. He mentioned the significance of ensuring the integrity of the election, especially as it relates to possible future federal elections.

On November 4, California voters will not only choose local leaders but also vote on a proposition to alter the state’s congressional map, creating five new districts likely to lean Democratic. This redistricting proposal has garnered support from Governor Gavin Newsom and former President Barack Obama.

However, critics like former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger have expressed strong opposition to this proposition, arguing it serves party interests over the people.

Federal monitoring in elections is not new; the Justice Department often dispatches officials to uphold civil rights laws. Nevertheless, there has been backlash from Democrats in these generally blue states, with criticisms suggesting interference in state elections. Newsom’s office stated that such actions are designed to intimidate and suppress voter turnout.

New Jersey’s Attorney General labeled the Department’s actions as “highly inappropriate,” questioning the legitimacy of the basis for such interference.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi reiterated the importance of transparency in voting locations to ensure public trust in the election process, committing to uphold election integrity.
