Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) said in a memo on Friday that former President Donald Trump’s initial medical assessment of his injuries at a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was that he suffered a “gunshot wound,” and argued that FBI Director Christopher Wray’s claim that Trump was struck by something other than a gunshot is “incorrect.”
Jackson penned a note to the American people and posted it on Truth Social.
As former Presidential physician to President Donald J. Trump, I have been monitoring his health and well-being, along with his physicians, since the assassination attempt on the evening of July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. The would-be assassin used a high-powered rifle to fire multiple bullets at relatively close range, one of which struck the former president and current Republican presidential candidate in his right ear.
I have reviewed President Trump’s medical records from Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was initially diagnosed and treated for a “gunshot wound to the right ear.” I served as an emergency physician in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, including as a combat medic in Iraq, and have treated numerous gunshot wounds during my career. Based on my direct observation of the injuries, the relevant clinical context, and my extensive experience in diagnosing and treating patients with similar injuries, I fully agree with the initial diagnosis and treatment provided by the doctors and nurses at Butler Memorial Hospital on the day of the shooting.
At a congressional hearing two days ago, FBI Director Christopher Wray suggested it could have been a bullet, shrapnel or glass. There is absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than a bullet. As the hospital and I have confirmed, Congress needs to correct the record. It is wrong and inappropriate for Director Wray to suggest otherwise. As a former White House Physician for 14 years, serving under three Presidential Administrations and as the designated physician to both Presidents Obama and Trump, I fully understand the global significance of this attempt on the life of a former President and current Republican presidential candidate. As such, I want to assure the American people and the world that President Trump is doing extremely well. He is recovering rapidly from a gunshot wound to his right ear. I will continue to assist President Trump and his physicians in any way they deem appropriate and will provide updates as necessary and with President Trump’s permission.
Sincerely,
Ronny Jackson
Testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, Wray questioned whether Trump was hit by a “bullet or shrapnel,” leading the media to speculate that Trump was not actually shot.
“With regards to former President Trump, I think there’s a question as to whether it was a bullet or shrapnel that struck him in the ear,” he said.
“Maybe Donald Trump didn’t get shot after all” read Headline from Newsweek, July 25th.

Headlines later Has been updated The story was changed to “FBI director says Donald Trump may not have been hit by bullet” and included a statement from the FBI. The story was updated to read:
An FBI spokesperson told Newsweek that since the attack, the FBI has “consistently and unequivocally maintained that the shooting was an attempted assassination of President Trump, resulting in the injury of the president, the death of a heroic father, and the injuries of several others.”
“FBI Director Wray provided detailed testimony before Congress on Wednesday about the FBI’s investigation. This was a heinous attack, and the FBI is dedicating enormous resources to learning everything possible about the shooter and what led to that act of violence. The FBI’s shooter reconstruction team continues to examine evidence from the scene, including bullet fragments, and the investigation is ongoing.”
