During his hearing on February 27ththPhelan expressed the need for more innovation and reforms in the Navy. He also discussed many other issues that plagued the country's maritime forces, such as the naval shipbuilding struggle.
“The US Navy is there [a] The intersection, which recorded expansion deployments, inadequate maintenance, huge cost overruns, delayed ship construction, audit failures, sub-housings and sadly high suicide rates, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Frankly, this is unacceptable. ”
Phelan, a businessman and co-founder of MSD Capital, was nominated for the position by President Trump.
“The US Navy and Marines remain the most frightening expeditions in the world, but the US Navy is at a crossroads,” Phelan continued in his opening statement. “Expansion deployment, inadequate maintenance, huge cost overruns, delayed shipbuilding, failed audits, sub-housing, and sadly, record suicide rates are systematic failures that have not been addressed for too long. And this is unacceptable.”
Additionally, Phelan spoke about the decline in recruitment that took place under the Biden administration.
Addressing the previous Democratic administration's decision to lower military eligibility standards to make up for the issue, former private investors told lawmakers that the Navy must ensure that the standards are “high” and the recruits they bring “can meet those standards.”
“Business is a combat, and there's no room for error in that regard. So you need the most capable and best people and you need to have high standards to meet that,” Phelan said. “What happens to many organizations is that you hire for their immediate needs and that person cannot grow. [into] That job. …In this business, we need to hire…'mr. And Mrs Tomorrows to make sure they can compete and do. ”
Meanwhile, the Navy currently has no officials with the highest unified role. Navy Times The outlet was reported. Admiral Lisa Francetti, director of Naval Operations, was fired by Trump last month as part of the administration's Pentagon leadership acquisition.
