Gold Star Father Reacts to Pentagon Review of Abbey Gate Bombing

Gold Star father Darin Hoover expresses a sense of hope regarding the Pentagon’s recent examination of the Abbey Gate bombing that claimed the lives of 13 service members. He has long felt frustrated by the lack of communication from the Biden administration, describing years of silence and generic responses from officials.

His son, Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Darrin “Taylor” Hoover, was among those killed in the August 26, 2021, suicide bombing during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Hoover shared that his family only received routine letters acknowledging their loss, with no personal touches or specifics about their loved ones.

Reflecting on past interactions, Hoover stated, “For the first three and a half years… we got nothing from the previous administration. It was crickets. All we received was a canned letter expressing regrets without any mention of the children.”

As part of the investigation, the Pentagon’s Afghanistan Withdrawal Task Force has conducted extensive interviews with senior military and civilian leaders and is preparing a final report, expected in the coming months. This review has analyzed over 9 million documents, a significant increase compared to the roughly 3,000 documents reviewed in an earlier investigation.

Committee chairman Sean Parnell noted that the previous review was limited in scope and heavily classified, which likely kept vital information hidden from the public. Hoover demands clarity on the reasons why so much was kept secret in the earlier assessment, asking, “They owe us an answer.”

When pressed on whether he believes crucial information was deliberately concealed, Hoover responded affirmatively, saying, “Yes, definitely information was hidden from us,” and added, “It just smells like a cover-up.” He questions what the authorities might have seen that led them to hide this information.

Parnell clarified in a statement that the review is the most thorough post-military action assessment in recent history, initiated by then-President Trump to ensure accountability and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in the future.

Hoover insists that if the new review reveals any failures, there should be consequences for those in command. His stance is that “if they have done something wrong… they should no longer be allowed to lead forces where lives are at risk.” He even suggests stripping pensions and, if appropriate, criminal charges for those responsible.

He further highlighted systemic failures in communication between military and civilian entities, remarking, “The right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing.” He also commended the service members for doing their best under challenging circumstances.

As this investigation unfolds, Hoover emphasizes the importance of public remembrance and honoring the sacrifice of the fallen. He urges everyone to reflect on these events leading up to Memorial Day, stating, “Let’s honor them… and live lives worthy of the sacrifices made.”
