Reaction to Trump’s State of the Union Address

Call me crazy, but I really enjoyed President Trump’s State of the Union address. Sure, it was long— the longest in at least 60 years— but it was also entertaining. The mood was optimistic, positive, and filled with hope for America’s future. On Tuesday night, Trump kicked things off by introducing the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team. While they didn’t all sing the national anthem as I secretly hoped, their gold medal reveal drew enthusiastic applause and chants of “USA! USA!” That really set a celebratory tone for the evening.

He didn’t come off as a president under fire with low approval ratings. Quite the opposite— he seemed relaxed and even funny at times. It was also clear he was incredulous at the pettiness of the Democratic opposition. I think he might have gotten a needed boost from this performance, not just because of the likeable speech but also due to his reflections on the significant achievements from his term so far.

Importantly, he didn’t pick a fight with the Supreme Court, which could have brought down the mood. He described the Court’s ruling on tariffs as “unfortunate” and “disappointing,” but then went on to stress tariffs’ importance for American businesses and attracting investments.

The audience was filled with inspiring individuals whose stories reinforced his policies. Who wouldn’t applaud the children who’ve survived serious injuries, or the pilot who, after being injured during a rescue mission related to Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, went on to receive the Medal of Honor? Or the National Guardsman who survived being shot in the head? These stories embody so much of what makes America great— courage, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism.

One of Trump’s main goals was to remind folks that President Biden left a mess that he’s trying to fix. From Biden, Trump inherited an economy heavily reliant on federal spending, a porous border, and prices that shot up over 20% in just four years.

Illegal immigrants flooded cities like New York, causing chaos and crimes, putting additional financial burdens on taxpayers. Unfortunately, these issues persist even as Trump has worked to deport criminals posing risks to communities. He called on Congress to ban sanctuary cities— a proposal likely to go nowhere, but still a necessary one.

He emphasized that he aimed to close the border, which, according to him, is now safer than ever. He reminded voters that if Democrats regain power, they could undo his progress.

As usual, Trump highlighted his major achievements. He noted a significant bill that includes the largest tax cuts in U.S. history, affecting various groups, from tips to Social Security. He even shared a story about a couple in Pennsylvania saving over $5,000 a year thanks to this legislation. He also touched on initiatives to lower prescription drug prices, make in vitro fertilization more accessible, and improve transparency in healthcare costs.

He mentioned a “Trump Account” for young children aimed at giving them a better start and recognized Michael Dell and his wife for their remarkable donations towards this initiative.

Trump addressed the sky-high electricity costs driven by the energy policies of climate-focused Democrats, arguing that he is seeking a solution. His recent executive order banning large Wall Street firms from buying homes is another effort to improve affordability, aiming to lower living costs— a concern that will likely resonate come the midterm elections.

His administration is reportedly also focused on tackling widespread welfare fraud, with the president claiming that reducing taxpayer money theft could help eliminate the deficit— even if that seems unlikely. Notably, the Government Accountability Office has pointed out that fraud results in hundreds of billions lost yearly. While the Biden administration has overlooked this issue, Trump’s team appears to be taking it on.

The situation in Minnesota, where a notable amount of welfare fraud was linked to Somali criminals, has become a political liability for Democrats, including Governor Tim Walz. Trump has appointed Vice President J.D. Vance to lead the investigation, likely putting Democratic states like California and New York under scrutiny.

All in all, it was a strong night for Trump but a rough one for the Democrats. Over 70 Democrats chose to boycott the speech, which only highlighted their diminishing influence.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Democrats for opposing popular initiatives like tax cuts while supporting less favored policies, such as gender reassignment for minors without parental consent. His candid observation—that “these people are crazy”— resonated with many in the room.

The key takeaway is that Trump understands the need to make life more affordable for everyday Americans. Now it’s crucial for him to act on that understanding. Following Tuesday night, it was clear he intends to do just that.
