Trump Honors 1980 Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team
President Donald Trump welcomed members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s ice hockey team, who are celebrated for their remarkable “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Soviet Union. During a ceremony on Friday, he signed bipartisan legislation that grants the team the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor given by Congress.
“This team united us, and they inspired us,” Trump remarked. “The United States was brought to a level of sports that they’ve never seen.”
Behind him stood 13 team members, including Mike Eruzione and Jim Craig, along with family members of the late Coach Herb Brooks, marking the 45th anniversary of their historic win.
“This was one of the greatest moments in the history of U.S. sports,” President Trump stated.
The team’s unexpected 4–3 win over the heavily favored Soviet Union during the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid has become a defining moment in sports history, often referred to as the “Miracle on Ice.” This victory ended the Soviet Union’s streak of four consecutive Olympic gold medals from 1964 to 1976.
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers highlighted that the team is being honored for representing “American greatness” and for igniting a “resurgence of national pride” through their triumph over the Soviet Union.
“President Trump will honor the legendary 1980 Olympic men’s ice hockey team whose ‘Miracle on Ice’ resulted in a historic and symbolic victory against the Soviet Union. This triumph fueled a resurgence of national pride as Americans watched Team USA unexpectedly take home the Gold Medal. No one is more committed to honoring American greatness and patriotism than President Trump,” Rogers said.
Eruzione, on behalf of the team, presented Trump with a replica of the iconic white cowboy hat worn during the opening ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Trump briefly wore the hat during the ceremony.
“This is an absolutely incredible honor. I’ve said this before, but when you put a USA jersey on, you’re playing for your country. And what an honor it was for us to put that jersey on and accomplish what we accomplished,” Eruzione reflected during the bill signing. “I’ve always said the gold medal is something that’s incredible, but this is the frosting on the cake.”
The ceremony comes just weeks ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and two years before the 2028 Summer Games, which the U.S. will host in Los Angeles. A known sports enthusiast, Trump has expressed excitement about being in office during such large global events as the Olympics.
