Unexpected Turbulence Leads to Injuries on American Airlines Flight
An American Airlines flight was involved in an incident on Sunday that resulted in five individuals being hospitalized due to “unexpected turbulence,” according to airline representatives. The flight, designated as 1286, was traveling from Miami to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.
The aircraft, which was an Airbus A321, safely arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport at approximately 10:50 PM. Reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicated that both cabin crew and passengers might have sustained injuries from the turbulence.
Emergency responders from RDU Fire and rescue teams from Wake and Durham counties met the flight around 11:30 PM to assist the affected individuals, who were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital.
Passengers onboard had startling accounts of the event. One traveler described the experience akin to a roller coaster ride, saying, “It sounded like we had hit something and then we just fell into the air.” Another noted that the sudden drop sent personal items, laptops, and drinks flying throughout the cabin.
According to the airline, three flight attendants and two passengers were taken to the hospital but were later released. However, specifics regarding the injuries weren’t released immediately. The airline did emphasize that seatbelt signs are activated during periods of turbulence.
One passenger recounted seeing two attendants get injured, mentioning that one had a broken arm while another was burned from hot water in the drink cart. It’s concerning how quickly the situation shifted; another traveler remarked, “People thought they’d lose their lives.” The FAA announced plans to investigate the incident further.
