Turner on Trump calling Jan. 6 rioters ‘hostages’: ‘I don’t believe they’re hostages. I believe in our judicial system’

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) says he believes in the American justice system and disagrees with former President Trump’s characterization of the rioters at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Stated.

I don’t think they are hostages. I believe in our justice system, but as you have reported, Martha, some of these cases have been overturned. Some of them even overturned the underlying legal structure of many of these cases,” Turner told co-host Martha Raddatz. ABC’s “This Week.”

“You know, this is going to be an ongoing legal process and…this president clearly has very strong personal views on this,” he added.

President Trump said last week that his first act if elected to the White House would be to free imprisoned participants in the January 6 riot, calling them “hostages.” He has previously expressed sympathy for those charged in connection with the Capitol attack, calling them “hostages” in the past.

“My first act as president-elect will be to close our borders and release the drill, baby, drill and unjustly imprisoned January 6th hostages!” Trump tweeted last week on Truth Social I wrote this:

He also spoke at a fundraiser for the defendants on January 6 last year.

Turner, chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, did not call the defendants hostages, but said President Trump did not call for rioters to attack the Capitol that day.

“As you know, he did not call for the storming of the Capitol. “There were questions about ‘even flipping out,'” he said.

“Of course, you would think that Donald Trump would have very strong feelings towards the people who were in jail or went to prison for this case,” he added.

according to Ministry of Justice, more than 1,358 defendants have been charged in nearly every state in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Approximately 497 people were sentenced to prison, according to the Ministry of Justice.
