A Twitch streamer was hospitalized after being hit by a car while walking along a highway in Indiana during a charity walk across the country.
Isaiah Thomas, who goes by “hmbl zayy” online, was live-streaming on Interstate 40 when a dark blue Mazda collided with him around 3 PM on Tuesday.
He was walking in the right lane when the Mazda was pushed into him after a silver sedan rear-ended the Mazda, causing the impact that threw Thomas off camera.
In a video of the scene, the screeching of tires can be heard moments before the collision. A woman’s voice can be heard shouting, “Bitch! Didn’t you see me?” although it wasn’t clear who she was addressing.
After being struck, Thomas reappeared on camera, capturing the aftermath and the scattered belongings from his overturned cart.
Emergency responders arrived about 20 minutes after the accident to check on him. Thomas expressed his gratitude to the officers, noting that a brace on his back likely saved his life.
He was then taken to the hospital for evaluation of neck, foot, and leg injuries.
In an Instagram video from his hospital bed with a neck brace, Thomas reassured his followers, stating, “Thank you everyone for checking on me. God is great. I’m fine. I’m just running some tests right now.”
He shared his shock at surviving the incident, relating that police were impressed by his condition, saying, “I’m so happy just looking at you like this. I’m not looking at you dead.”
While he didn’t specify the full extent of his injuries, Thomas is determined to complete his journey to California, saying, “We’re going to finish this race. We’re not going to let the Devils win. God is great, I’m alive, and that’s what matters.”
At the time of the accident, Thomas was on day 34 of his 100-day trek from Philadelphia to California, aiming to raise $200,000 to establish “HMBL University.”
This initiative is a trade-based education program designed for high school graduates who are unable or unwilling to attend college, providing them a fair chance at success.
“HMBL University” and Thomas’ “HMBL Summer Camp” will offer training in various fields such as CNA, plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, carpentry, and medical technology.
So far, he has raised nearly $45,000 toward his $200,000 goal through a GoFundMe campaign launched on March 24.
This funding aims to help students return to their African homeland and experience new cultures and opportunities beyond their current circumstances.
Thomas emphasized that his mission is larger than himself, as he strives to provide access, build a future, and inspire young people to see beyond their immediate circumstances.
