A person accused of breaking into a home and sexually assaulting two elderly women has been arrested and taken into custody in Dearborn, Michigan, police said. WJBK.
The suspect, a 52-year-old man, was reportedly tracked down by authorities at a motel in Melvindale. He was arrested after police gathered evidence and spoke to witnesses about the harrowing circumstances. Both victims were taken to the hospital for their injuries.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the Southfield neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. WXYZ. Officers arrived at the scene after being alerted to the situation. The two victims are reportedly sisters, one in her 80s and the other in her 70s.
Neighbors said one of the elderly women ran out of the house without any clothes on, which likely saved both of their lives.
“Upon arrival, police discovered two elderly female residents who had been subjected to severe abuse and sexual assault by an unknown adult male who had illegally entered the property,” police said in a statement.
“Dearborn Fire Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel immediately provided medical aid to the victim at the scene and prepared him for transportation to an area hospital.”
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, pending formal charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation is still ongoing, but authorities believe the man acted alone and randomly targeted women.
“The crimes that occurred in our community over the weekend are shocking and horrifying,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said.
“I applaud and thank the local residents who assisted our police officers in bringing the perpetrators to justice quickly and protected our residents from further threats.
“As our investigation continues, our thoughts remain with the victims of this incident, their families, and their families as they heal and recover from this trauma.”
Dearborn police are reportedly deploying additional patrols to the area to provide peace of mind to area residents.
It appears that the two elderly women were not acquainted with the suspect in this case, so it is unclear what specific charges he faces.
