On February 14, 2018, 17 people were needlessly killed by 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Two fathers, Andrew Pollock and Ryan Petty, lost children in this massacre and have dedicated their lives to fighting for legislation that actually makes sense in combating school shootings.
Their losses are devastating, but they do not support the Biden administration’s latest policies, such as the now federalized red flag system, which they believe will do more harm than help.
“In Parkland, the sheriff’s office went to the house of my daughters’ killer over 40 times and never arrested him,” Pollock told Sara Gonzalez.
“Red flag gun control only works if it’s enforced. If these people commit a crime and nothing is put behind it, it will never come to light,” he continued, adding that innocent He pointed out that police cannot be left solely to take away weapons from civilians, and that due process is necessary.
“We don’t need more laws. We need to enforce the laws that are in place. We need to arrest criminals, put them behind bars, hold them accountable where they learn lessons, and protect innocent children. Don’t put them back on the streets to hurt them.”
When it comes to Democrats, Pollock and Petty agree. They’re focusing on the wrong thing.
“They have such a simplistic mindset that they can’t look past anything. … They spout this gun control BS that really killed me and Ryan. ” says Pollock.
Gonzalez is concerned about the government’s lack of action regarding mass shootings.
“Most of these mass shootings, whether it’s at a school or somewhere else, it’s like, oh, this person was on somebody’s radar. Whether it’s the FBI or a federal investigation. That, local law enforcement,” Gonzalez said, adding, “They don’t really connect the dots all the time, or they don’t seem to want to connect them.”
