Two Pennsylvania state troopers injured during response to shoplifting, suspect deceased

Two state police officers in Pennsylvania are critically injured after being shot while responding to a theft report at a retail store in Franklin County, according to officials.

The incident took place at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Guilford Township around 6:10 p.m. Upon arrival, the suspects fled in a vehicle, leading police on a chase onto Interstate 81.

Authorities deployed spike strips, successfully stopping the getaway vehicle off the highway near Exit 3. Two female suspects were apprehended, but it was then that a male suspect opened fire on the officers, injuring two. Officers retaliated, fatally wounding the male suspect.

Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concern, stating that he and his wife are praying for the injured officers, encouraging others to join them. “Tonight, Lori and I are praying for the souls of the two state troopers who were shot and killed in the line of duty in Chambersburg,” he shared on social media.

Shapiro emphasized the dedication of Pennsylvania’s law enforcement, acknowledging the risks they face daily to protect communities. He urged people to keep the injured officers and their families in their thoughts.

While state police assured residents that there was no immediate threat, they did mention an ongoing active situation at the scene.

This shooting adds to a troubling trend, as it follows the deaths of three officers in York County last month during an ambush, with the suspected shooter killed in that incident as well. This occurred just months after another York County employee lost their life in a separate shooting at a hospital.

The Pennsylvania State Police Officers Association thanked the officers for their bravery, remarking on their commitment and courage in the face of danger.
