Man, this is rough …
Maureen Koster, a Dutch athlete, was placed in the hospital after she was knocked unconscious and suffered a “mild concussion” while the 3,000m final was taking place Sunday at the European Indoor Championships. The event was hosted in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. (RELATED: High School Track Runner Allegedly Assaults Opponent By Blasting Her On Head With Baton In Middle Of Race)
A two-time Olympian, Koster fell down after she got tripped up while surrounded by opponents near the 1,000m point of the competition. According to a replay of her fall, Koster tumbled to the track which led to her head bouncing off the ground.
It appears that Koster was knocked out immediately, and then in response, was instantly relocated trackside where she received treatment from medics. The 3,000m final carried on afterwards. Koster, a middle distance runner, was transported to a hospital which ultimately led to Dutch Athletics giving confirmation that she was both conscious and responsive.
Damn … what’s going on with all of the wacky stuff in track and field as of late?
As you see above, I recently wrote a story about a high school track athlete allegedly getting blasted in the head with a baton by an opp, and now we have this situation with Maureen Koster. Rough stuff.
Luckily though, she’s good.
“It still feels unreal what happened last night,” said Koster on Instagram. “Thankfully, aside from a mild concussion, a few bruises, and a broken heart, I’m fine. Really hope to be back on my feet soon!”
Best wishes going forward, Maureen!
