Wildfires Rage Across Europe, Casualties Reported

Catastrophic wildfires are wreaking havoc in Europe, with two fatalities reported on a Greek island. Meanwhile, firefighters in eastern Belgium are contending with fierce fires in a local nature reserve.

Since the summer began, Europe has been under intense heat and dryness, prompting the evacuation of thousands as the heatwave persists.

On Sunday, two separate fires erupted nearly simultaneously on Salamina, a Greek island with approximately 37,000 residents.

According to Greek Fire Brigadier General Vasileios Vatrakogiannis, the first blaze ignited around 2:40 p.m. local time in Peristeria on the island’s southern side, followed by a second fire in Selinia just 20 minutes later.

Tragically, an elderly couple perished in the fire outside their home in Peristeria, as noted by the Greek Coast Guard.

As a precaution, more than 500 individuals were ordered to evacuate Salamina Island. Additionally, around 500 tourists were rescued by boat from beaches near the resorts of Siviri and Forca due to rapidly spreading flames fueled by strong winds and the high risk of wildfires.

“These conditions caused the fire to quickly reach dangerous proportions and rapidly spread toward nearby residential areas within seven minutes,” stated Vatrakogiannis.

Sodoris Zanis, the deputy mayor of Salamina, emphasized the need for officials to prevent the two fires from merging into a larger blaze in the central mountains of the island.

Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiades mentioned on a program that ten individuals required medical attention for injuries or smoke inhalation related to the fires.

“A total of 10 cases were recorded, ranging in age from 15 to 89 years, with symptoms mainly due to burns and smoke inhalation. Five patients have been or are being transported, including one with second-degree burns covering 25% of their body surface area,” Georgiades noted on social media.

In Belgium, roughly 600 residents of Wymes and Bütgenbach were instructed to evacuate on Saturday as shifting winds caused smoke to billow heavily into their area following the outbreak of wildfires the previous day.

Firefighters are currently facing challenges extinguishing a large fire in Belgium’s largest nature reserve, the Hyfens, which spans about 7,400 acres.

Liège Governor Hervé Jamal reported that over 250 firefighters and paramedics are engaged in a significant operation to combat the wildfire.

Farmers, as mentioned by some reports, are utilizing tractors to transport water from Lake Robertville to assist in dousing the flames.

This fire has been characterized as one of the worst in Belgium’s recent history, having more than doubled in size within just 24 hours.
