US Embassy in Iraq Prepares for Possible Evacuation

There’s growing tension regarding potential conflicts between the US and Iran, prompting the US embassy in Iraq to gear up for evacuating personnel deemed at high security risk.

According to several unnamed US and Iraqi officials, this decision has been confirmed, albeit without detailing the specific reasons behind the urgent partial evacuation.

Anna Kelly, a spokesperson for the White House, mentioned, “The State Department routinely assesses American personnel abroad, and this decision stems from a recent review.”

Moreover, reports indicate that the US State Department may soon instruct non-essential employees and their families to leave embassies in Bahrain and Kuwait.

During an event at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday night, President Trump stated the embassy relocation from the Middle East is due to rising concerns, hinting at the likelihood of military conflict with Iran.

In his address, Trump shared that military families are being “moved” from the region, describing it as potentially becoming “a dangerous place,” and reiterated that Iran should not have nuclear weapons.

Recently, Trump expressed doubts about reaching a nuclear deal with Iran following the rejection of a recent proposal. The US has been pushing Iran to halt its uranium enrichment, which is a process that could lead to nuclear weapon development.

In response, Iran has dismissed the US’s resolution, asserting its right to continue its uranium enrichment and suggesting a need for negotiations to resolve the ongoing deadlock.

Trump asserted, “They just desire things they can’t have. They are reluctant to relinquish what they must. They want enrichment.”

Alongside his remarks, Trump has frequently threatened military action against Iran if an agreement isn’t finalized.

On the Iranian side, Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh has warned of retaliation targeting US military bases in the region should there be an attack on Iranian territory.

The US maintains a military presence across various Middle Eastern countries, including Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE.

Following news of the anticipated US evacuation, oil prices surged by over 4%, reflecting concerns about regional instability. Presently, around 2,500 US troops are stationed in Iraq, as reported by the Department of Defense.
