President Trump Reaffirms Commitment to Peace Between Ukraine and Russia
State Department Spokesman Tommy Piggott spoke on “America’s Newsroom” about President Donald Trump’s aim to facilitate peace between Ukraine and Russia, outlining a proposed deal that might require Ukraine to give up more territory.
The framework, backed by the U.S. and developed by Special Envoy Steve Witkov, has raised concerns among European allies and increased pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. In a statement made public on Friday, Zelenskiy expressed his steadfast refusal to acknowledge Russian sovereignty over any Ukrainian land, describing the current situation as one of Ukraine’s most challenging periods.
Zelensky articulated the pressures facing Ukraine, hinting at a “very difficult choice” ahead: either compromise on national dignity or risk alienating a crucial ally. He noted the potential for “28 difficult points” or confronting an exceptionally harsh winter, expressing a distrust of those who have previously attacked his country.
In remarks following a meeting with Ukrainian officials in New York before an emergency UN Security Council session, Witkov described the discussions as “very productive.” Zelenskiy, poised yet cautious, urged Ukrainians to stay disciplined throughout the negotiation process with the U.S. He stressed the importance of maintaining a calm approach, insisting that Ukraine does not wish to appear disruptive to peace efforts.
He emphasized the risks Ukraine faces from intensified attempts to weaken its resolve but confidently asserted that “we will succeed.” Reports indicate the draft plan may include conditions such as Ukraine ceding control of the eastern Donbas region to Russia and placing limits on Western military actions in Russian territory, alongside a military cap of around 600,000 soldiers for Ukraine.
The White House indicated that Witkov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are diligent in finalizing this plan and mentioned that Trump is supportive of completing the discussions by the holiday season.
Following a conversation with U.S. Vice President Vance, Zelenskiy is set to converse with Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as European leaders evaluate the proposal’s ramifications. While Ukraine has acknowledged receipt of the plan, Zelenskiy has been vocal about rejecting any notion of recognizing Russian claims over Ukrainian territory.
Zelenskiy asserted on social media that their national interests must be preserved in all engagements with international partners. He has consistently denied the legitimacy of any territorial concessions made under duress, stating, “There is no reward for going to war.” Furthermore, if Russia is unyielding in pursuing bilateral discussions, he has called for a strong response from the U.S.
Ukrainian sources noted that critical concerns include potential NATO limitations, territorial compromises, and troop reductions. A former official described the draft terms as “political suicide,” especially given that it could result in significant territory loss for Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the lack of detailed discussions between Washington and Moscow about the proposal, but affirmed that Russia remains open to peace talks. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Walz called for immediate actions in favor of a peaceful resolution, emphasizing diplomatic pathways as essential for lasting peace.
In a firm statement during the Security Council meeting, Ukraine’s deputy representative declared that any accord undermining Ukrainian sovereignty would not be acceptable. “Our land is not for sale,” she asserted, making clear that Ukraine wouldn’t entertain restrictions on its defense or military capabilities.
European leaders were taken aback by the unfolding situation. Reports stated that leaders from Germany, France, and the U.K. reassured Zelenskiy of their full support for a just peace, though many only learned of the U.S. proposal through media outlets. Mertz mentioned he had postponed domestic engagements to prioritize consultations with both Zelensky and Trump.
Zelenskiy anticipates a meeting with Trump soon to address the proposal’s main components and outline critical boundaries for Ukraine that should not be crossed.
