UAB Softball Coach Fired After Investigation
UAB softball coach Taylor Smart has been dismissed following an independent inquiry, which came about two months after serious allegations of physical and emotional abuse were brought to light.
“We found enough evidence to confirm that Coach Smart’s conduct was inappropriate and violated both UAB policy and certain NCAA regulations,” stated attorney Brianna Young, who oversaw the investigation.
Smart had initially left the program in April.
In early May, Sports Illustrated reported on the troubling allegations surrounding Smart’s behavior, which included claims of physical and mental abuse, as well as racist comments and inappropriate relationships with both staff and players.
According to a UAB spokesperson, “Taylor Smart will not be returning to UAB Softball. Anna Shelnutt will serve as the interim head coach while we search for a replacement. Our commitment is to ensure a safe and respectful environment for our student-athletes.” Details regarding the employment decision will remain undisclosed.
Reports suggest that Smart’s troubling behavior may have started shortly after her hiring as head coach in 2024. A source indicated that a player and another program affiliate found themselves in a precarious situation, as Smart allegedly maintained an inappropriate relationship with the player and even stayed at their apartment.
In March, during a game at East Carolina, Smart reportedly punched one of her players twice. An email from ECU’s athletic director John Gilbert detailed an eyewitness account of Smart striking the player, who seemed to be in distress afterward.
Additionally, Smart’s training methods raised eyebrows. Players mentioned an incident where she allegedly pushed a vehicle during drills, which added to concerns about her behavior.
Prior to her time at UAB, Smart was the associate head coach at Florida Atlantic University.
