UC Riverside Strikes Deal with Pro-Palestinian Mob, Violates California Anti-BDS Law

The University of California, Riverside on Friday bowed to demands from pro-Palestinian activists at an “encampment” on campus and broke with the rest of the University of California (UC) system to consider withdrawing from Israel.

Activists call on UC Riverside to boycott Israeli university, part of nationwide effort by anti-Israel activists and organizations that may be funded by foreign sources, according to New York City Police Department did.

Local KTLA 5 report:

The encampment began on April 29, when protesters occupied the area next to the bell tower. The movement was led by the university’s Palestine Justice Student Chapter.

The UCR Administration will remove UCR’s endowment from the management of the UC Investment Office and will work with the Student and Academic Senate appointed by the ASUCR Diversity Council to consider investing such endowment in the following manner: Agree to form a task force that will include faculty members appointed by. Considering the companies involved in manufacturing and delivering weapons would be financially and ethically sound for the university.

The business school has canceled its global programs in Oxford, USA, Cuba, Vietnam, Brazil, China, Egypt, Jordan and Israel.

The University of California, Riverside chapter of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) described the terms of the agreement somewhat differently, arguing that: triumphantly On Instagram, the institution announced it had suspended “all study abroad programs with Israel.”

Additionally, SJP claimed that the University of California, Riverside has committed to boycott Sabra brand hummus. “Sabra” is the Hebrew word for an Israeli born in Israel. Some activists claim that Middle Eastern foods like hummus were “stolen” by Israel from Arabs. (Sabra is based in the US)

In return, the students at the encampment agreed to remove their tents, saying they had “won” through coercion.

But it’s unclear how the UC Riverside agreement would mesh with existing California law that blocks anti-Israel boycotts, known as the “anti-BDS” (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) law. . In 2016, then-Gov.Jerry Brown (D) autographed AB 2844stipulates the following:

It is the purpose of Congress to ensure that taxpayer funds are not used to do business with or support states or private entities that engage in discriminatory practices against individuals under the pretext of exercising their First Amendment rights. . This includes, but is not limited to, discriminatory acts committed against individuals of the Jewish faith under the pretext of boycotting or protesting the constitutionally protected state of Israel.

Any person who submits a bid or proposal to a state agency for a contract valued at one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) or more, or who proposes to enter into or renew a contract with a state agency, must certify under penalty of perjury. , when a bid or proposal is submitted, or when a contract is renewed… Policies they have toward sovereign nations or peoples recognized by the United States government, including, but not limited to, the state and people of Israel. , used to discriminate in violation of the Unruh Civil Rights Act (Civil Code Section 51) or the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (Chapter 7 (commencing with Section 12960) of Chapter 2.8 of Part 3 of Title 2 of the Code). It’s not a thing. Government Code).

The University of California, Riverside joins Brown University as the first universities to bow to demands to consider divestment from Israel. But it is unclear whether UC Riverside will be able to meet that request, regardless of the University of California system’s own policy against divestitures from Israel.
