UCLA Secures Narrow Victory Over Oregon
UCLA pulled off a crucial 17-15 win against Oregon on Saturday, maintaining their undefeated season and strengthening their bid for a Big Ten Championship spot.
The No. 21 Bruins travelled to Eugene to face the No. 13 Ducks, who were missing their starting quarterback, Dante Moore, due to a concussion suffered in a previous game against USC.
This left backup Dylan Raiola to lead the Ducks on the field. UCLA got the scoreboard ticking first with a field goal in the opening quarter, but Oregon soon responded with a touchdown. However, their attempt for a 2-point conversion failed, a misjudgment that would later haunt them.
UCLA added another touchdown in the second quarter and one more in the fourth, extending their lead to 17-6. At this point, Coach Dan Lanning made the decision to replace Raiola, who had struggled with just 6 completions on 19 attempts for a mere 43 yards and two interceptions, with senior Brock Thomas.
The switch ultimately paid off when Thomas led the Ducks on a scoring drive, culminating in a field goal with just over five minutes remaining. He managed to connect with wide receiver Evan Stewart for another touchdown, narrowing the gap to 17-15 with a little over two minutes left in the game.
Reflecting on that earlier failed 2-point conversion, the Ducks knew another shot at those two points could turn the game. However, despite getting the ball back with a chance to gain the lead, the Bruins held their ground, securing the victory.
This win is a significant achievement for UCLA, while Oregon faces a tough setback with their second loss. The outcome is sure to have implications for the rankings, the Big Ten standings, and the College Football Playoff discussion.
For the Bruins, it’s a moment to savor, celebrating an important road win as they continue their quest for success.
