UK Implements Sanctions and Halts Trade Discussions with Israel Due to West Bank Violence: Completely Unacceptable

UK Suspends Free Trade Agreement Talks with Israel

London: The United Kingdom announced on Tuesday that it has halted its negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Israel, citing the ongoing violence attributed to Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the conditions in the region “totally unbearable,” renewing his calls for a ceasefire and an increase in humanitarian aid for those affected in Gaza.

This announcement followed a summons of the British ambassador to Israel by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) regarding a recent ground assault in the Gaza Strip.

“We are concerned about the escalation from Israel. Our demands for a ceasefire remain consistent; it’s the only way to secure the release of hostages,” Starmer conveyed.

He also reaffirmed the UK’s opposition to West Bank settlements and emphasized the need for a substantial boost in humanitarian support for Gaza.

In an update to Parliament, Foreign Secretary David Lammy spoke about the latest sanctions against individual settlers, front organizations for illegal settlers, and entities that “incite violence” against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Lammy mentioned the cycle of violence perpetuated by extremist settlers, expressing, “I have witnessed firsthand the consequences of this violence—the fear experienced by victims and the impunity granted to perpetrators.”

He further criticized the Israeli government’s inaction regarding these issues, warning that their lack of intervention jeopardizes solutions for Palestinians and risks the two-state framework.

The UK’s sanctions target individuals like prominent settler leader Daniela Weiss, as well as two illegal outposts and groups that have encouraged violence against Palestinians. These measures include financial restrictions, travel bans, and barring certain individuals from office, following earlier actions against 18 other entities involved in similar violence.

The FCDO reported that since January 1, 2024, the UN has recorded over 1,800 assaults by settlers on Palestinian communities, indicating a “dramatic surge” in such violence.

While existing trade agreements remain in effect, the UK cannot pursue new FTAs with the current Israeli government led by Netanyahu, which it describes as adopting harmful policies in the West Bank and Gaza.

Furthermore, the UK has reiterated that Hamas must unconditionally release all Israeli hostages, arguing that the group “cannot continue its activities in Gaza.”

This announcement follows a joint statement by UK, French, and Canadian leaders, expressing strong opposition to Israeli military actions in Gaza and the settlement expansions in the West Bank.

The statement clearly indicated that failure to halt these actions will necessitate further responses.

UK Minister for the Middle East Hamish Falconer stated, “Israel must adhere to international humanitarian laws and facilitate the prompt and unhindered delivery of aid to Gaza. A ceasefire and the release of hostages are crucial. Ultimately, a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis.” The newest sanctions list includes individuals and entities like Harlel Libi and Zohar Saba, among others.
