UK man dies after after falling from the Tate Modern art gallery in London

  • A man died after falling from the Tate Modern Museum in London, a popular tourist destination, on Friday.
  • Police and emergency services were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • As a show of respect, Tate Modern announced it would close its galleries for the remainder of the day.

A man died Friday after falling from the Tate Modern, one of London’s busiest tourist attractions, police said.

Police said officers and paramedics were called to the gallery at around 10:45 a.m., where an unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the death was being treated as “unexpected” but was not suspicious.

Tate Modern has announced it will be closed for the day “as a mark of respect”.

“At this time, all our thoughts are with the person’s family and friends,” the gallery said in a statement.

Housed in a former power station on the south bank of the River Thames, the gallery welcomes more than five million visitors a year.

In 2019, a 6-year-old French boy was thrown from the gallery’s 10th floor outdoor observation deck and suffered life-changing injuries. The 18-year-old man, who did not know the boy, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to at least 15 years in prison.
