Ukraine Faces Ongoing Blackouts as Winter Nears, While Russia Maintains Drone and Air Strikes

While world leaders gather to discuss solutions for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, everyday people in Ukraine face the looming threat of winter without adequate heating or electricity. The ongoing drone strikes and air attacks by Russia are causing significant damage to the country’s power infrastructure.

Survival in Jeopardy with Planned Power Outages

With the attacks persisting, Ukraine is bracing for intermittent blackouts throughout the winter. Ukrenergo’s director, Vitaly Zaichenko, mentioned that while there might be rare instances of power availability, strict usage restrictions will usually apply.

Repair crews are working tirelessly to maintain power and prevent Russia from dividing the grid, a scenario that would effectively halt its operations. Measures are also being implemented to bolster the system to accommodate energy imports from the EU, though frequent damage to the grid often undermines these efforts.

As of October, the eastern Donetsk region was the only part of Ukraine not impacted by Russian assaults on the power grid. Reports indicate that the northern region of Čurnihiv is experiencing outages at least every hour.

Christian Organizations Step In to Provide Support

“This winter will be one of the harshest they’ve ever faced,” remarked Eric Mock, senior vice president of mission operations at the Slavic Evangelical Association (SGA), which works in Ukraine and the former Soviet Union.

Mock has initiated an effort called “heat and hope,” aimed at delivering firewood, coal, blankets, and warm clothing to families struggling to afford these essentials. They are also supplying generators to an evangelical church acting as a community warming center.

One pastor from the three churches receiving a generator transports it via a trailer to each location he serves. “I don’t just power my church. There are two other villages where I pastor. I see enthusiasm and hope everywhere I go,” he shared.

“Despite the cold, people come to church bundled in thick coats and blankets to sing and pray together,” Mock noted. “Thank God they are alive.”

Numerous other organizations are also reaching out to support Ukraine, including Cru, Mission Eurasia, and others.
