NATO Intercepts Ukrainian Drone Over Baltic Sea

NATO fighter jets conducted a patrol mission in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday afternoon, intercepting and shooting down a Ukrainian military drone that had entered allied airspace. This incident prompted local authorities to advise residents to refrain from approaching windows and walls, encouraging them to seek safety indoors.

At around noon local time (5 a.m. ET), dozens of counties in northeastern Europe, near the borders of Estonia and Latvia, were placed on air raid alert after the drone was detected. Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur confirmed, saying, “Our air radar and air force systems had identified potential air threats in advance.” He noted that the drone came from Ukraine.

NATO has established a Baltic Air Policing Mission, which includes fast-response forces from member states. This initiative ensures the availability of up to 12 aircraft, prepared around the clock for any potential threats. On Tuesday, both Romanian and Swedish fighter jets responded, with reports indicating that a Romanian F-16 was responsible for the drone’s downing.

The drone, believed to have originated from Ukraine, fell onto uninhabited territory with debris landing in a swamp in central Estonia.

The air raid warning lasted about an hour, during which the Latvian Ministry of Defense advised citizens to avoid any drone debris, as it might still pose risks. People were also urged not to share images or videos online, but rather to report any findings to the police. Authorities recommended seeking shelter in the innermost parts of buildings, away from windows and outside walls.

Additionally, railway services were temporarily halted as trains were stopped in response to the situation until it was deemed safe to continue.

The drone’s incursion into NATO airspace occurred following a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian cities bordering European nations. Notably, airports in St. Petersburg and Pskov were closed during this period due to the ongoing attacks.

Intriguingly, the trajectory of the drone that was downed suggests it might have been targeting Pskov, as it crossed over the designated area.

In the context of heightened tensions, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to conflicts occurring near NATO borders, causing various incidents where drones and missiles have inadvertently or purposefully entered allied airspace, leading to interceptions. Noteworthy is that NATO air defenses previously shot down a Russian drone over Poland, with Warsaw accusing Moscow of deliberately testing the alliance’s defenses.
