Ukrainian Man Arrested in Italy for Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage

Ukrainian Arrested Over Nord Stream Pipeline Explosion

BERLIN – A Ukrainian man, referred to as Serhii K, has been detained in connection with the 2022 undersea explosion that compromised the Nord Stream gas pipeline linking Russia and Germany, according to German prosecutors.

His arrest took place overnight in Misano Adriatrico, near the Italian city of Rimini, following a European arrest warrant issued on Monday.

The explosion, which occurred on September 26, 2022, damaged a key pipeline meant to transport Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea. This event unfolded amidst rising tensions from the Ukraine war, prompting European nations to reconsider their energy reliance on Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Investigations have found remnants of underwater explosives from samples taken during searches of yachts involved in the ongoing probe, even though most of the investigation has been stalled for some time.

Prosecutors stated that Serhii K is suspected of being a coordinator for those responsible for placing the explosives. Charges against him include causing an explosion, obstructing constitutional operations, and damaging property.

Officials mentioned that Serhii K and his associates used yachts leaving from the German port of Rostock. They reportedly utilized a forged identity and were affiliated with a German company through an intermediary.

No further details were provided regarding other individuals involved, nor the specific motivations behind the sabotage.

German Justice Minister Stephanie Fbig lauded the investigation’s progress, calling it a significant achievement. She expressed optimism about the advancements made in uncovering the incident.

The explosion resulted in extensive damage to the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, previously a primary channel for Russian gas to Europe until Moscow cut off supplies in August 2022. Additionally, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was rendered inoperative after Germany halted its certification process just before the invasion of Ukraine.

There have been accusations from Russia claiming that the United States orchestrated the explosion, which Washington has firmly denied. The pipeline has drawn criticism from the U.S. and its allies, who cautioned that heavy reliance on Russian gas poses risks to energy security in Europe.

In early 2023, German media suggested Procrane County was engaged in sabotage, with speculations that Ukraine declined a proposal and authorized an attack, though German officials have shown caution regarding these claims.

German prosecutors have not indicated when they expect Serhii K to be transferred to German authorities. Meanwhile, Swedish and Danish investigations concluded in February 2024, leaving Germany with the ongoing case.
