Ukrainians Accuse Russia of an Alleged Sabotage Scheme

Ukrainian National Detained in Poland Linked to Russian Intelligence

WARSAW, Poland – On Tuesday, prosecutors announced the detention of a Ukrainian national in Poland, suspected of being involved in a Russian intelligence operation aimed at sabotage. Additionally, two other individuals were arrested in Romania.

The prosecutors revealed that Russian intelligence agents were believed to be planning to ship explosives and incendiary devices to Ukraine, designed to either spontaneously combust or explode en route.

The goal of this operation, according to Polish officials, was to instill fear among the population and create instability in EU countries supporting Ukraine. In Romania, two Ukrainians were detained who were allegedly part of the same conspiracy. They are aged 21 and 24 and reportedly left two packages containing improvised explosives with a courier service in Bucharest. Romanian intelligence personnel managed to neutralize the devices, leading to their preventive detention for 30 days.

The Ukrainian man in Poland was among eight individuals recently apprehended on suspicion of planning sabotage across various areas in the country, as stated by a spokesperson from the State Prosecutor’s Office.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk mentioned the eight arrests in a post on X, while Tomasz Siemoniak, the Coordinating Minister for Special Services, added that these actions included reconnaissance of military sites and critical infrastructure, preparing for sabotage efforts, and executing direct attacks.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Polish authorities have detained numerous individuals on accusations of sabotage and espionage. Just last month, Lithuanian prosecutors revealed they had dismantled a network of suspects allegedly tied to Russia, who were planning arson attacks in various European nations.

Western officials have attributed a series of attacks and incidents across Europe to Russia and its affiliates since the invasion commenced three years ago, according to data compiled by The Associated Press. These incidents have included filling vehicle tailpipes with foam in Germany, schemes to detonate explosives on cargo planes, as well as arson attacks on shops and museums, cyberattacks targeting politicians, and espionage by certain organizations in the UK.
