UN Cuts Estimate of Children Killed in Gaza by 50%; Blames ‘Fog of War’ for Errors

The United Nations has cut its estimate of Palestinian children killed in Gaza by half, casting doubt on a figure often used by international news organizations and governments to criticize Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

of jerusalem post office report Saturday:

On May 6, the United Nations released data showing that 34,735 people were killed in Gaza, including more than 9,500 women and 14,500 children.

On May 8, the United Nations released data showing that 34,844 people had been killed, including 4,959 women and 7,797 children.

This follows months of accusations from leading statisticians that the figures produced by Gaza authorities cannot be accurate.

said David Adesnik, senior fellow and research director at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. answered: “This change signals that the United Nations has finally recognized that there is no evidence behind Hamas’ initial claims that more than 14,000 children and 9,000 women were killed in Gaza.” If so, the UN should clearly state that it has lost confidence in a source it has recognized as reliable for months. This change is one of many UN offices operating in Gaza. Although it may only reflect the conclusions of one firm, it is a clear step forward.

The Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) asked UN officials about the change.united nations blamed “Fog of War”:

At a press conference on Friday, JNS asked Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, why the calculations don’t add up.

“Revisions are being made…Of course, you know it is difficult to come up with numbers in the fog of war,” Haq told JNS. “We get numbers from various sources on the ground and try to collate them. We will update the numbers as we collate them and continue to do so as we progress.”

On Monday, Israeli government spokesman Avi Heyman said Israel’s “real estimate” of casualties in Gaza was 14,000 terrorists and 16,000 civilians.

Although the media repeatedly cites casualty figures from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Ministry of Health, these figures indicate thousands more casualties, with civilian deaths and terrorist deaths, or Palestinian deaths. No distinction is made between those killed by erroneous rocket fire and those killed by Israeli artillery fire.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asserted that it is “reasonable to assess that Israel has acted in violation of international humanitarian law in certain instances.”

He quoted the State Department as saying report In fact, the opposite result was obtained. “It is difficult to assess individual cases and reach definitive findings.”

The report said only that the allegations of violations of international law were “reasonable” given the number of U.S.-made weapons used by Israel, i.e. “Israel’s heavy reliance on U.S.-made defense products.” .

Heyman said Monday that “Israel abides by international humanitarian law. Israel abides by the laws of armed conflict. Our fight is with Hamas, not the people of Gaza. We are fighting against the destruction.” “We must make every effort to avoid civilian casualties when attacking Hamas.” Claims to the contrary are “clearly unproven,” he said, adding that Israel “is not in Gaza. We will continue our moral fight against Hamas in the region,” he added.
