UN Member States Gather in Geneva Amid Controversy Over Special Rapporteur’s Report

On Thursday, delegates from UN member states convened in Geneva to discuss the recent report by Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory. This meeting took place shortly after the US mission to the United Nations called for Albanese’s removal, citing her history of “anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias.”

In her report, titled “From the Economy of Occupation to the Economy of Genocide,” Albania characterized Israel as a “Settlers-Colonial Apartheid Regime.” Furthermore, she claimed that corporations were complicit in what she described as an “ongoing massacre campaign in Gaza.” It’s striking to see such strong language being used.

During the session, Albanese stated, “Israel is responsible for one of the most cruel genocides in modern history,” adding that Israel utilized genocide to test advanced weaponry and surveillance technology. Her remarks drew immediate attention and sparked discussion around the allegations she presented.

The Palestinian envoy, Ibrahim Khraishi, was the first to respond after Albanese’s opening statement, noting the absence of an Israeli representative. He took this opportunity to commend Albanese’s work while also criticizing the US for its stance against her.

Khraishi acknowledged Albanese’s report as a thorough examination of how the economic landscape under occupation has transitioned into one characterized by genocide, with backing from various multinational corporations.

Yet, not all voices echoed that sentiment. A notable dissent came from UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer, who pointed out that Israel had faced accusations of genocide 68 times. He questioned the basis of Albanese’s claims, arguing that her report lacked context, particularly the omission of Hamas’ attacks on October 7, 2023.

The Israeli mission to the UN was physically absent from the meeting, but the ambassador criticized Albanese’s comments, suggesting they served to promote “terrorist propaganda.” He claimed her uses of words like “genocide” and “apartheid” were unfounded and inflammatory.

Albanese’s report also took aim at organizations like the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which has received backing from the US and Israel. The GHF has faced criticism, with Khraishi calling it a “trap” for humanitarian efforts. A spokesperson defended their actions, stating they had provided millions of meals to Palestinians, asserting that their assistance is both widespread and effective.

In light of ongoing tensions, the US mission reiterated its concerns regarding Albanese’s biases. They highlighted her recent actions, which they interpreted as escalating anti-Semitism through targeted threats against various organizations.

Despite previous accusations and criticism from countries like France and Germany, Albanese remains in her role. Her comments in February 2024 sparked further debate, when she suggested that the victims of a tragic event were killed in response to Israel’s actions, a statement many found controversial.

The complexities of the situation persist, revealing a landscape filled with debates, biases, and conflicting narratives. It seems clear that the topic will continue to stir strong reactions and discussions amongst international bodies.
