UN Expert on Palestinians Calls for Dismissal of Trump Proposal

Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has urged Palestinians to reject President Donald Trump’s plan aimed at resolving the conflict in Gaza, labeling it a “trap of the century.”

According to reports, Trump unveiled this plan with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the week. The proposal includes the release of all Israeli hostages, disarmament of Hamas, a new government in Gaza that would exclude Hamas, and potential for a future Palestinian state if the authorities in the West Bank can implement governance and ideological reforms.

Albanese, who was part of a group of anti-Israel activists attempting to reach Gaza, expressed her disagreement with Arab and Muslim nations that have accepted Trump’s proposal, as well as with the Palestinian Authority and many individuals in Gaza.

In a statement reported by the Jerusalem Journal, Albanese acknowledged being among several activists outside of Gaza and reiterated her condemnation of the Trump plan, despite evidence suggesting that many in Gaza actually support it.

After nearly two years of outcry about the conflict, termed “genocide” by many, the global “free Palestine” activists seem hesitant to see it come to a close. Surprisingly, rather than embracing the US plan—which enjoys backing from numerous Arab and Muslim countries—some of Israel’s most outspoken critics have oddly gone silent or taken a stand against it.

The stark contrast between the newfound consensus among pro-Palestinian advocates and the desires of those in Gaza raises serious questions about how genuinely these so-called supporters care for the well-being of Palestinians and if they’re just using the situation to further their agenda against Israel.

There remains uncertainty regarding whether Hamas will accept the deal or continue the ongoing conflict, with Trump allowing them several days to respond before supporting Israel’s efforts to dismantle Hamas.
