ICE Raids Lead to Mass Arrests at Nebraska Meat Packing Plant

A recent operation at a Nebraska meat packing plant has resulted in the arrest of nearly half of its workforce by immigration agents.

At Glen Valley Foods in Omaha, officials targeted 107 employees during the raid, with 70 workers detained over their immigration status.

In a startling turn of events, some employees reportedly took drastic measures to evade capture. In one incident, a worker allegedly threatened a federal agent with a box cutter while barricaded behind a wall compartment.

“These are good people. They’re really part of our family,” was the sentiment expressed by the plant’s president, Chad Hartman.

Many employees were found hiding in the rafters or cramped spaces, like walk-in freezers, desperately seeking safety. Some required immediate medical assistance due to their precarious situations, according to reports.

Hartman expressed sadness over the situation, noting that some of the detained workers had committed years—over 15 usually—to the company. “There’s no playbook for this,” he remarked, highlighting the challenges of finding new staff to fill the gaps left by those arrested.

Gary Lower, the owner, claimed he utilized the government’s e-verify system for employee checks but admitted he was misled by individuals employing stolen identities. “I don’t grasp why they used false IDs when they could have obtained a visa,” he said, reiterating his view of the workers as “part of our family.”

Federal agents informed local media that they executed the raid based on concerns regarding “fake, fraudulent, or unrealistic ID combinations” among employees. Nonetheless, business owners are currently not facing any penalties.
