UNC system removes DEI course requirements following Trump orders

North Carolina public universities must remove all course credit requirements linked to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) following President Trump's executive order signature last month.

Andrew Tripp, senior vice president of legal affairs at UNC System, wrote a memo for all 17 premiers on Wednesday. Alternatively, any other topics identified in section VII of the Equality Policy have been suspended. ”

Tripp “could more than $1.4 billion in critical federal studies in a memo obtained by Hill if it does not comply with an executive order called “End illegal discrimination and restore merit-based opportunities.” He warned that funds are risky.

The Prime Minister said, “While we can allow exemptions from individual key unique requirements, such a waiver of general education requirements is not available.”

Tripp also wrote that students are already enrolled in program requirements that they are currently plagued with, and that “is immediately considered to have been converted into a general selection requirement.”

Students may stay on the course or withdraw without penalty.

“At all events, student graduations must not be delayed or postponed due to unsatisfaction.

Requirements for discontinuing the curriculum or programme as described in this memorandum. However, students must continue to meet the minimum credit hour requirements established by Section 400.1.5[R]Trip said in a three-page note.

“All future university registration processes will comply with this memorandum, whether in summer, fall, spring or any other semester,” he added.

A UNC System spokesperson said “Like in agencies across the country, they are evaluating recent federal changes and ensuring that universities can continue the federal funds they rely on.” He told Hill via email.

“This will not affect course content. We will suspend the requirements for DEI-focused courses as a graduation condition,” the spokesman added.
