Undocumented immigrant admits to pretending to be a Border Patrol agent

Man Pleads Guilty to Impersonating Immigration Agents

A man, Jaime Ernesto Alvarez Gonzalez, 53, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after prosecutors allege his actions put law enforcement at risk. He pleaded guilty to obstructing deportation efforts by pretending to be a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Notably, Alvarez Gonzalez is an undocumented immigrant who overstayed his tourist visa years ago.

Prosecutors assert that his impersonation was deliberate. On January 8, he reportedly followed a real Border Patrol agent in a black Ford F-150 that was modified to look like an official government vehicle. This Chevy was decked out with Border Patrol stickers, a fake radio antenna, a light bar, and had handcuffs hanging from the mirror, although the license plate incorrectly read “Federal” instead of “Federal.” The ruse was convincing enough that the actual agent believed he was being tailed by a fellow officer, prompting him to abandon his mission.

During the incident, Alvarez Gonzalez shared details about the encounter as it unfolded, claiming he was “on patrol.” He even recorded himself while pursuing the agent, eventually pulling up alongside him at a stoplight and announcing his intent to surveil him further.

Prosecutors noted that he donned a face mask and a hat with a “thin green line” insignia, seemingly on the lookout for federal agents involved in ICE and Border Patrol activities.

When confronted by actual agents, things escalated quickly. Alvarez Gonzalez reportedly shouted obscenities, instructed onlookers to vacate the area, and allegedly called in reinforcements, leading to multiple vehicles arriving to pursue the federal agents on the highway. He documented the chaos on his phone.

Days later, he was arrested. The investigation revealed a more extensive operation involving identity theft. Photographs shared by prosecutors show him at a shooting range handling firearms, despite being prohibited from having them. One photo shows him brandishing a rifle with a caption that mentioned “Pancho Villa.”

Additional images depict him with various rifles next to his truck and posing with what appeared to be law enforcement-style plates and a badge—all part of a concerning pattern of impersonation.

Authorities have reported that they found an FBI-style badge among his belongings, as well as a Glock pistol and ammunition linked to weapons he shouldn’t legally possess. It’s also alleged he attempted to erase evidence by asking a co-worker to remove police markings from his vehicle while in custody.

Having pled guilty, Alvarez Gonzalez now faces up to 15 years in prison just on the firearm charge. His attorney has yet to provide a statement.
