A man who was brought to the U.S. during the Obama administration and given a driver’s license by a sanctuary state has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of an 8-year-old girl in a car accident in Boise, Idaho.
Elvin Elgardo Ramos Caballero was driving a pickup truck legally, having a license from Oregon, when he attempted a right turn at an intersection on November 11. Unfortunately, he collided with 8-year-old Mora Gerety, who was crossing the street, leading to her untimely death.
At the time of the incident, Ramos-Caballero had a pending federal warrant from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for not attending an immigration hearing, which resulted in a deportation order issued in absentia back in May 2019.
“The life of 8-year-old Maura Gerety was tragically taken by an individual who should not have been in our country, much less issued a driver’s license in Oregon,” said Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin. “Her family, classmates, friends, and community will carry this burden of loss. We urge everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly painful time. Open border policies have transformed our communities into border towns, leading to tragic outcomes.”
In a recent discussion with Fox News Digital, Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donald expressed the need for a federal crackdown on sanctuary state laws that permit undocumented immigrants to obtain commercial driver’s licenses.
This call for action follows a joint operation in Oklahoma, where ICE and the state’s Highway Patrol arrested 70 undocumented individuals, including 34 charged with driving large trucks illegally.
Earlier this year, an undocumented immigrant who repeatedly failed to secure a commercial driver’s license in Washington state made an illegal U-turn in Florida, causing a crash that killed three people. Although the company that trained this driver claimed he could speak English, footage from the scene suggested otherwise, revealing limited proficiency.
Donald indicated that investigations like the one in Oklahoma, along with similar incidents, pose growing risks to national security. “American citizens, who are doing things right, are now vulnerable to life-threatening situations with drivers who may not understand the law or read signs,” he noted.
“This issue contributes to my support for the Weigh-In Act in Washington, D.C.,” Donald explained. “The legislation aims to hold states accountable for issuing commercial driver’s licenses and will empower the Department of Transportation, as well as allow the Treasury to withhold federal funds for non-compliance.”
