Undocumented immigrant convicted of inappropriately touching high school students as Democratic attorney almost dismisses case

Israel Flores Ortiz, an 18-year-old undocumented immigrant, was convicted of molesting over a dozen high school girls in Fairfax County, Virginia, on Thursday, facing a total of nine misdemeanor charges. The decision followed criticism aimed at Democratic U.S. Attorney Steve Descano, who had supporters questioning his handling of the case due to witness testimonies being called just a day prior to the verdict.

During an extensive hearing where numerous victims shared their accounts, the judge ruled Flores Ortiz guilty on nine counts of assault and battery but found him not guilty on three others, as reported by local media. Notably, one charge was dismissed by the judge.

Flores Ortiz, originally from El Salvador, reportedly entered the U.S. under the Biden administration in 2024 and was a high school junior at the time of the incidents.

Concerns escalated on March 5 when police were alerted to multiple assaults occurring at Fairfax High School, which led to an arrest warrant being issued. Flores Ortiz voluntarily surrendered to authorities on March 7.

His sentencing is slated for April 21. Following the hearing, Sean Kennedy, president of Virginians for Safe Communities Association, accused Descano of being willfully incompetent and criticized him for lessening the charges, which might complicate potential deportation.

“This case crumbled today,” Kennedy asserted, stating that the late subpoenas put the integrity of the case in jeopardy. Despite these allegations, he acknowledged the victims’ bravery in forcing the case to trial.

He went on to express dismay over how Descano had characterized the assaults in his opening statements, calling it a trivialization of the victims’ experiences.

Unfortunately, while the guilty verdict was a step forward, there are concerns about the potential leniency of the upcoming sentence. Kennedy indicated that ICE would likely handle Flores Ortiz’s deportation to El Salvador, should the local leadership choose to release him back into the community.

The backdrop of this incident casts a spotlight on Fairfax County, highlighting a rising anxiety among residents regarding crime linked to individuals who are undocumented. Parents have voiced their frustration over the school’s handling of the allegations, expressing fear for their children’s safety while at school.

One parent shared her dismay, emphasizing her horror that such incidents could happen in an environment meant to be protective, particularly during what should be safe transitions between classes.

Attention has also turned towards the broader implications of immigration policies in relation to public safety, with calls for accountability in the wake of such disturbing events.
