A man from Mexico, who had been deported multiple times, was driving without a valid license when he crashed into another vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of a 6-year-old girl in North Carolina, according to law enforcement. The incident occurred on July 3, when Jamie Santiago Corona failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with an SUV driven by 35-year-old Kelly Toler, who had her two children with her in Pitt County.
Toler and her 4-year-old child were seriously injured and taken to ECU Health Greenville, while Toler’s 6-year-old daughter, Kari Toler, sadly died at the scene.
Reports indicate that the family was en route to lunch and then the pool when the accident happened.
“This monster caused a car crash that killed a 6-year-old girl and injured her mother and 4-year-old child,” said Lauren Biss, Acting Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security. “This tragedy was 100% preventable. Our prayers are with Kali Toler and her family.”
Corona now faces charges that include misdemeanor death by vehicle, failing to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, and driving with a revoked license. Furthermore, records show that he has reentered the United States illegally three times, which is a felony according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He also has a history of drunk driving, with previous charges including vehicular homicide/manslaughter, obstruction of police, and various traffic violations.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detention hold on Corona, and the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office has stated it will work with ICE on this case.
