United Nations dismisses China-Russia proposal to extend sanctions relief for Iran

UN Resolution on Iran Sanctions Fails

The United Nations voted on Friday against a resolution proposed by China and Russia that aimed to extend sanctions relief for Iran under its nuclear deal for an additional six months. The final tally was 4 in favor and 9 opposed. Algeria, China, Pakistan, and Russia supported the resolution, while Denmark, France, Greece, Panama, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Somalia, the UK, and the US voted against it. Guyana and South Korea chose to abstain from the vote.

This voting outcome follows the UK, France, and Germany activating “snapback” measures in response to concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iranian President’s Reaction

Iran’s President expressed that the situation was a “severe betrayal” during addresses at the UN General Assembly. Unless a last-minute agreement is reached, sanctions are set to take effect, which will include penalties targeting frozen Iranian assets abroad and restrictions related to arms trade and ballistic missile development.

President Pezeshkian criticized the opposing countries for their approach, suggesting that he hoped for a reconsideration towards diplomacy rather than what he termed “horrifying measures.”

Diplomatic Meetings Yield No Results

Before the UN vote, Iran’s Foreign Minister met with officials from France, Germany, and the UK. However, a European diplomat commented that these discussions did not lead to any new developments.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reiterated the nation’s stance, stating that Iran would not relent under pressure and characterized negotiations with the US as likely futile.

In a recent interview, President Pezeshkian labeled the UN decision “unfair, unjust, and illegal.”
