Missing University of Alabama Student in Barcelona

A University of Alabama student has gone missing during a spring break trip in Spain, according to his family.

Twenty-year-old James Paul Gracie, known as Jimmy, was last seen on Tuesday at the Choco nightclub in Barcelona, where he was visiting a friend studying abroad. His mother shared the details on Facebook.

Therese Gracie indicated that her son was seen by a friend inside the club around 3 a.m. that night. While the friend chose to leave, Gracie opted to stay behind.

Reportedly, he had trouble returning to the Airbnb where he was staying, with his mother stating, “The police have his mobile phone, but he was unable to return to the Airbnb. Has anyone seen him?” She appealed to the “Students of Barcelona 2026” Facebook group for assistance.

Originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, Gracie is recognized as an honors student studying accounting at the University of Alabama. His university confirmed his enrollment but noted he was on a personal trip when he disappeared.

At the time of his disappearance, Gracie was wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a gold chain featuring a rhinestone cross.

In October, Gracie announced his election as pastor of the Alpha Phi chapter of the Theta Chi fraternity. Fellow students reported sightings of him and have encouraged his family to reach out to local officials and embassies to bolster search efforts.

Choco nightclub, considered one of the top clubs worldwide, ranked seventh globally and was named the best in Barcelona in 2025. The venue is known for its impressive dining options and vibrant nightlife scene.

On the night of Gracie’s last sighting, live music was headlined by an EDM artist at the club.
