Dimon warns that another interest rate hike could further strain the economy

Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, expressed concerns that if interest rates increase by another percentage point, the financial strain on the U.S. economy would deepen. Rates have been on the rise this year due to ongoing inflation worries, higher fuel prices, significant capital demand for artificial intelligence development, and concerns about increasing government debt.

At the end of September, the yield on the 10-year Treasury—an important benchmark influencing borrowing rates—had reached approximately 5.3%, up from around 4% six months earlier. Dimon commented on CNBC that “moving from [5%] to 6% would result in more pain than the jump from four to five.”

He explained that if rates go up further, it means everyone will have to pay more for borrowing, and refinancings would occur at higher rates, potentially leading to increased credit spreads. Though he emphasized that he wasn’t foreseeing rates hitting 6%, he insisted that individuals should be ready for that possibility.
