Uproar in Israel as Head of Terror-infested Shifa Hospital Released to Gaza

The country was plunged into political turmoil on Monday after Israeli authorities released Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of the Gaza Strip’s Shifa hospital, which was used by Hamas and other terrorist groups as a base for smuggling hostages and carrying out assassinations.

Abu Salmiya was held without charge for seven months and then released.

Many Israelis believe he was responsible for the attack at the hospital, and Palestinians saw his release as proof of his innocence and an injustice against detainees.

The Shin Bet and the IDF have released 50 detainees in the Gaza Strip, including: Shifa Hospital Mohammed Abu Salmiya has been under administrative detention in Israel since November 23rd.

Hamas used Shifa Hospital as a base for terror attacks and to hide hostages, but no concrete evidence has ever been publicly presented that Abu Salmiya was directly involved.

An IDF official said in November: Jerusalem Post Abu Salmiya gave questionable answers when asked what he knew about Hamas’ systematic use of his hospital, but questionable answers without evidence typically do not warrant administrative detention for more than seven months.

In the absence of evidence specifically pointing to Abu Samia, his release may well have been legally necessary.

The release sparked a back-and-forth of recriminations among members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, who tried to blame each other for Abu Salmiya’s release without at least freeing the Israeli hostages.
