Urban league raises concern over alleged 'state of emergency'

National Urban League Declares “State of Emergency”

The National Urban League has raised concerns, declaring a “state of emergency” in the country. Their report, titled “The State of Emergency: Democracy, Civil Rights, Progress under Attacks,” targets the current administration.

Since January 20, 2025, they argue that the federal government has been moving toward a backdrop of policies that threaten personal and civil rights, fair education, equitable housing, access to healthcare, and the democratic process across the nation.

White House spokesman Harrison Fields responded, stating, “While these so-called civil rights groups may have fostered division, the president remains focused on uniting the nation, bolstering the economy, securing borders, and promoting global peace. This vision, embraced by a significant number of Black Americans during President Trump’s recent re-election, contrasts sharply with Democrats, who he claims have neglected Black voters to appease a different base.”

Mark Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, emphasized that the idea of living through a crisis isn’t merely rhetorical. He expressed concern over a government seemingly intent on sacrificing foundational principles like freedom and justice, rather than ensuring that diverse national truths are acknowledged.

The report alleges that the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has been repurposed as an instrument for partisan retaliation, warning that such a shift poses a significant threat to civil rights enforcement and could allow unchecked discrimination to proliferate under the pretext of “reverse racism.”

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other lawmakers have praised diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, stressing that these policies enhance democracy by broadening opportunities, ensuring fair access to resources, and developing inclusive leadership.
