US and Russia Prepare Ukraine Peace Proposal Involving Compromises

U.S. and Russia Propose Plan to End Fighting in Ukraine

The U.S. and Russia have put together a proposal aimed at halting the intense conflict in Ukraine, but it’s expected to require considerable compromises from Kyiv.

Details on what Ukraine will need to concede are somewhat vague. However, they likely echo earlier demands made by Russia since its invasion began in 2022, according to sources familiar with the situation. Importantly, the plan also aims to put a stop to Russian military actions.

A senior U.S. official, who spoke anonymously, mentioned that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff has been working on this plan for about a month. He’s been gathering feedback from both Ukrainian and Russian sides to find acceptable terms.

Zelenskiy Wants U.S. to Respond Strongly to Putin

It’s reported that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the proposal and is in support of it. This official noted that both nations need to make moves toward compromise, not just Ukraine.

“President Trump has always emphasized his desire to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. He’s expressed frustration over both sides hesitating to agree on peace. Nevertheless, he and his team remain committed, and they are working on a comprehensive plan meant to stop the violence and foster a lasting peace,” said White House press secretary Caroline Levitt.

According to the evolving terms of this proposal, Ukraine might need to give up some territory to Russia and reduce its stock of certain weapons. This could also mean a decrease in U.S. military support.

Russia aims to gain control over the entire eastern Donbas region, which is a significant objective of its ongoing military actions.

Could Trump’s Ceasefire Plan Serve as a Framework for Peace in Ukraine?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has consistently rejected the idea of ceding any territory to Russia.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that officials are working on a list of potential solutions to help resolve the conflict, incorporating feedback from both parties. He stated on social media that concluding such a complex war demands a serious exchange of pragmatic ideas. Achieving lasting peace will necessitate tough concessions from both sides.

However, on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that “no ongoing talks” are currently happening with the United States regarding the war’s conclusion.

In summary, while there appears to be a framework aiming to address the conflict in Ukraine, significant hurdles remain, particularly concerning territorial concessions and mutual cooperation.
