US Urges Israel to Cease Bombing in Damascus
Reports indicate that the US has urged Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Damascus, emphasizing the need for Tel Aviv to protect the Druze minority amidst growing sectarian violence, as outlined by a senior official on Wednesday.
The Syrian special envoy has reportedly reached out to Israeli officials in hopes of de-escalating the conflict. This appeal comes after reports emerged regarding violence against Druze and Bedouin groups in southern Syria, prompting the new Syrian government to take action. In response, Israel has conducted strikes in Syria, insisting on its obligation to safeguard religious and ethnic minorities. Currently, US officials are encouraging Israel to negotiate with the new Syrian administration, which recently replaced Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
One official mentioned to Axios, “We urged the Israelis to stand down and take a breath.”
Historically, the Druze community was an important ally to the Assad regime, benefiting from a degree of religious freedom under his governance. However, divisions have surfaced among communities regarding how to engage with the new government, leading to uncertainty about the future treatment of various minorities in Syria.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, “The Syrian regime must withdraw its troops from Sweida,” reiterating that the IDF will continue to target regime forces until they do so and warning of further action if necessary.
With the current government in Syria seemingly opening the door to potential normalization of relations with Israel, recent events cast significant doubt over these prospects. The fresh wave of bombings raises serious concerns about diplomatic efforts and the fragile ceasefire that had been in place.
The Department of Defense has been contacted for further comments, though a response has yet to be received.
