Security Alert from US Embassy in Jerusalem
The US embassy in Jerusalem issued a security alert directing that US government employees and their families stay indoors amid ongoing drone and missile strikes from Iran on Israel.
This alert, first issued on Saturday and reiterated on Sunday morning, comes after Iranian strikes have reportedly resulted in at least 10 fatalities and over 180 injuries.
“Due to the current security situation and the continuing conflict between Israel and Iran, the US Embassy has advised US government officials and their families to evacuate until further notice,” the embassy announcement on its website stated.
In light of nearby missile impacts, the embassy has also offered employees living close to the Department of Defense in Tel Aviv the option to relocate to safer accommodations.
Iran’s Response and Israeli Airspace Closure
In the meantime, Israeli airspace remains closed for arrivals and departures, according to a spokesperson from the Israeli Airports Authority.
Iran’s artillery bombardment has been a reprisal for Israel’s attacks on Iranian nuclear and military sites, which Israeli officials claim were preventive measures as Iran advanced towards developing nuclear weapons.
“Let me explain what we would have faced if we hadn’t acted. This administration knew that Iran was preparing to arm terrorists with nuclear capabilities,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted on social media. “It’s a nuclear attack on a massive scale that threatens global security.”
Warning Issued to Iranian Citizens
Israel has indicated that its campaign against Tehran has concluded, yet it has cautioned Iranian citizens.
“Emergency alerts for all Iranian citizens: anyone near military weapons production sites must evacuate immediately and stay away until further notice,” stated the Israeli Defense Force in a warning broadcasted to Farsia. “Being near these facilities poses serious risks to your life.”
The IDF contrasts its tactics with Iran’s, which have targeted civilian areas.
“We are sending this message to Iranian citizens: while Iran attacks without warning, we choose to notify innocent people, even at the expense of surprise,” the IDF mentioned on social media. “Human life is our priority, setting us apart from our adversaries.”
