US Relies on Key Puerto Rico in Bold Trump Operation Against Dictator Nicolás Maduro

Puerto Rico’s Strategic Role in Recent Military Actions

Puerto Rico, often overlooked in national discussions, has actually played a significant part in efforts aimed at removing President Nicolas Maduro, highlighting its strategic importance in the region.

This U.S. territory has belonged to the United States since 1898, and its residents became U.S. citizens in 1917. During World War II, Puerto Rico was crucial for the U.S. Navy. However, the military’s presence waned after the Cold War. Recently, though, it has taken on a vital role in the bombing operations orchestrated by the Trump administration in the Caribbean, particularly concerning raids and subsequent recoveries involving Maduro, according to a report by Politico.

Located about 800 miles north of Venezuela, Puerto Rico has turned into a significant transit hub for military aircraft and drones amid the ongoing operations, as mentioned in the same report. Naval bases on the eastern side of the island have even resumed activities after being inactive since 2004.

Manuel Quiñones, the report’s author and a Puerto Rico native, shared a personal observation, noting he might have witnessed a U.S. drone while preparing for a flight. He mentioned, “I’ve definitely noticed more military activity on the island. For instance, at the airport in Ponce, I saw military planes close to the terminal. I didn’t make it to Aguadilla to see the drones, but I think I caught a glimpse of them around 4 a.m. Sunday as we were getting ready for takeoff.”

On his way to the U.S., Maduro first landed at a former air force base in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. A photo released showed him holding a common bottled beverage found in Puerto Rico.

The report also noted a divide among Puerto Ricans regarding the rising military presence. Some residents have voiced opposition, while others are supportive. Many have even driven by military sites to catch a glimpse of the activity.

In the midst of all this, Governor Jennifer González Colón, a supporter of statehood and an ally of Trump, expressed her approval of the military action. She stated, “As Governor of Puerto Rico, I take pride in witnessing the end of the narco-dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro. The U.S. military can count on Puerto Rico as a strategic ally in its efforts to enhance national security and foster stability in our region.”
