USA Today heavily criticized online for strange assertion about transgender athletes

A recent opinion piece in USA Today has sparked a range of reactions, from embarrassment to outright laughter, as it attempted to reshape the dialogue around athletes and transgender identities. In her column, Nancy Armour commended Olympic champion Simone Biles for her pointed critique of former swimmer Riley Gaines, who has been vocal about protecting female athletes from competition with transgender women.

Armour described Gaines’ stance as “a stupid thing,” attributing it to what she called “LGBTQ brainwashing,” which she claims muddles people’s thinking. Following Gaines’ comments, Armour made the questionable assertion that there isn’t scientific evidence showing a physical advantage for transgender female athletes over cisgender women.

She wrote, “There is no scientific evidence that trans female athletes have more physical benefits than cisgender female athletes,” although her comments drew plenty of skepticism online. In a previous piece, she mentioned that the lack of enough participants makes it difficult to conduct scientific studies on this topic.

Responses on social media were filled with disbelief and mockery. One user stated, “The left is like Ouroboros; if you wait long enough, it eats itself,” suggesting that the original ideals of feminism have morphed into something contradictory. Another commentator framed Armour’s arguments as a “religious profession of faith,” suggesting a level of fanaticism in her beliefs.

Critics also highlighted what they viewed as hypocrisy in the way Armour protects her social media presence while advocating against protections for women in sports. Others expressed frustration over USA Today’s coverage, labeling it as “pathetic” and questioning the logic behind Biles’ support for transgender athletes.

Interestingly, this comes at a time when public sentiment appears to be leaning against the idea of transgender athletes competing in categories that do not align with their biological sex.

In a broader context, USA Today has faced scrutiny recently for its sympathetic portrayal of a suspect’s family after a violent attack on a pro-Israel demonstrator. The incident raised questions about the coverage and the responsibilities media outlets hold in presenting such narratives.
