JuJu Watkins is taking the college basketball world by storm, even though he hasn’t finished his freshman season with the USC Trojans yet.

In the fourth quarter of a game against the Colorado Buffaloes, Watkins made a deep 3-pointer for the 11th 30-point game of his career.

Watkins surpassed former University of Southern California star Cheryl Miller’s school record of 30 points in a single season.

Miller was in attendance Friday night to watch Watkins finish with 42 points and write his name in the USC record book.

Watkins expressed gratitude for being a part of USC basketball history.

“Honestly, it’s insane,” Watkins said after the game. “But, of course, that’s Sheryl Miller. I have a long way to go to be part of that conversation. To be a part of that Trojan legacy, to continue to evolve the game, continue to grow the game, grow the game.” I’m really happy to be able to continue.” There’s a culture here at SC. ”

USC coach Lindsey Gottlieb described the matchup with Colorado as a “heavyweight battle.” Before the game, Watkins showcased his incredible talent by making a one-handed basket from behind the team bench.

The football style of throwing caught Gottlieb’s attention, and he playfully kept Watkins’ pitches off football coach Lincoln Riley’s radar.

“Don’t even think about it,” Gottlieb jokingly wrote on X (formerly Twitter), tagging Riley and USC football.

“For me and for the team, the attention JuJu is getting is really shining a light on Sheryl in the way it should, right?” Gottlieb said. “She’s breaking these records, and we get to say, ‘By the way, Cheryl is the greatest of all time.'”

“It’s not just Sheryl. There are women who played here. They’re not just great USC players, they’re the greatest women’s basketball players of all time.”
