USMNT receives update on Chris Richards before the 2026 World Cup

USMNT Prepares for World Cup Opener Amid Injury Concerns

As the U.S. men’s national team gears up for their World Cup opener against Paraguay on Friday, all eyes are on the team’s defensive strategy. Coach Mauricio Pochettino has expressed concerns, primarily regarding the fitness of defender Chris Richards and the status of his injured ankle.

A recent video showed Richards participating in training at Irvine’s Great Park, a promising sign after he had missed a pre-tournament friendly and other team practices due to an ankle injury. The defender sustained a torn ligament in his left ankle during a Premier League match against Brentford on May 17, but managed to finish that game. Since then, he has mostly been training alone.

Returning to team activities on Monday, Richards is now one step closer to possibly playing in the highly anticipated matchup at SoFi Stadium.

Pochettino sounded hopeful when discussing Richards’ progress but remained noncommittal about his availability. “We will see,” he said. “Today is a first for the team, so it’s good that almost everyone is ready to be selected for the game.”

Richards himself seemed optimistic, mentioning, “Feels good. When I first entered the camp after a long two-day journey, my ankle was a little swollen, but I’ve been receiving treatment almost around the clock. I feel great and am preparing for the opening match a week from today. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Despite his teammates preparing for two pre-World Cup games lately, Richards had been focusing on rehabilitation. His return to training was marked by smiles and laughter with teammates and even signing autographs for fans after practice.

Given Richards’ pivotal role in the national team, his progress is crucial for their chances in the World Cup. The offense, featuring stars like Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun, looks strong. In the midfield, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie are expected to play significant roles. However, the defense raises some questions, especially with veteran Tim Ream at 38 years old. Richards, who currently plays for Crystal Palace, is considered the team’s best defender and adds a vital calming presence to the backline.

Having missed the 2022 World Cup due to a hamstring injury, it’s personally significant for Richards to be involved this time around. If Monday’s training is any indication of his progress, he seems to be on track to take the field on Friday night.
