USPS worker dies in mail processing machine incident in Michigan

A U.S. Postal Service employee tragically lost his life after getting stuck inside a mail-processing machine at a distribution center in Allen Park, Michigan, according to officials.

Nicholas John Acker, aged 36, was found dead on Saturday after being trapped in the machine for several hours. He worked as a maintenance technician at the USPS Detroit network distribution center.

Local reports indicated that the fire department was called to the center after Acker’s fiancée, Stephanie Jaszcz, reported that he hadn’t returned home after his shift. She even went to the facility and waited outside for hours before reaching out to authorities.

Jaszcz expressed her concerns, stating, “We want to know what happened and how long he was there.” She seemed understandably distraught over the situation, emphasizing a desire for clarity about his final moments.

Mail-processing machines, which vary in size and are responsible for sorting and weighing mail, are prevalent in the facility, according to reports. It’s unclear how Acker became trapped in one of them.

When firefighters arrived, they found that he had been dead for six to eight hours. Police have labeled the incident an “accidental death,” but the details surrounding how it occurred are still under investigation.

The USPS released a statement expressing their sadness over the loss of their employee, offering thoughts and prayers for his family while confirming that operations at the distribution center would continue as usual.

Jaszcz criticized the postal service for their response, noting that they didn’t mention Acker’s name or acknowledge his service as an Air Force veteran. She found their focus on operational continuity, rather than recognizing the man who had died, especially troubling, saying, “A man is gone. A veteran. A husband. A human being. And all you can think about is the mail continuing to move? It’s awful.”
