Utah hunter finds skeletal remains of man missing since 2019 in remote mountains

A man searching for a fallen deer antler in a remote mountainous area of ​​Utah accidentally discovered the remains of a man who went missing in 2019, authorities said Friday.

According to the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, the cabin hunter was in the Hensel Mountains southeast of Snowville on April 27 when he alerted officers to skeletal remains.

Box Elder County deputies and search and rescue teams responded to the scene and recovered the skeletal remains. The body was turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office, where dental records identified him as Matthew Bronco.

Details about Bronco’s cause of death were not immediately available.

“We extend our condolences to the family of Matthew Broncho,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “While this is difficult news to receive and there are still some unanswered questions, we hope it brings some comfort to know he has been found.”

Bronco, of Fort Hall, Idaho, was 35 years old when she was reported missing on March 24, 2019. Bronco’s dog was also reported missing.

At the time, Fort Hall police notified the sheriff’s office that Broncho’s pickup truck had been spotted at Exit 7 on Interstate 84 in Snowville. Broncho’s wallet and cell phone were found in the truck.

Despite multiple agencies and volunteers participating in the initial search efforts, the Bronco was not found at that time. A joint investigation between the Sheriff’s Office and the Fort Hall Police Department has been ongoing since Bronco’s disappearance.
