Van Hollen calls White House mass firing memo ‘mafia-like intimidation’

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) has criticized President Trump, describing his recent threats regarding potential mass firings during a government shutdown as “mafia-style horror mail.” Van Hollen expressed concerns that these threats are damaging to the American public.

In a statement, Van Hollen mentioned, “President Trump is engaged in mafia-style horror mail, and his threats are ultimately hurting Americans.” He went on to allege that the President is repeating the failed tactics of individuals like Elon Musk, targeting dedicated civil servants who perform crucial functions for the nation. He noted that many of these workers often have to be rehired after the repercussions of such cuts are felt by the public.

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director, Russell Vert, plays a significant role in the Project 2025 initiative, which aims to reduce the federal workforce. The OMB has recently issued directives to federal agencies indicating that mass firings may occur if funding is extended past September 30th and large parts of the government shut down.

According to a memo from the OMB, department leaders are encouraged to evaluate whether they should issue reduction in force (RIF) notifications based on specific criteria, such as if a program is “not consistent with the President’s priorities.” Programs meeting these criteria may face severe cuts.

This situation is intensifying pressure on Democratic congressional leaders to back Republican spending measures to ensure the government remains operational until at least November 21st.

However, Van Hollen affirmed that Democrats are committed to defending government workers. Other prominent figures, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY), also publicly criticized the Trump administration for the OMB memo.

Van Hollen stated, “These dedicated workers have nothing to do with the ongoing political and policy conflicts that have brought us to the brink of closure. These threats not only undermine American services and interests, but they could also be illegal. We will fight using every means at our disposal.”

The White House has been contacted for comment.
